wassermann schultz. the tea party may have took it on the chin last night, but doesn't feel that way this morning. what secretary sebelius said to testify again this morning. we will find out how much the health care fight played into voter's minds in the swing state of virginia. good morning from washington. the day after wednesday morning quarterbacking. november 6th, 2013. this is the day after edition. let's get to the first reads of the morning. the surprise of the nate was the nail biter in virginia. democrat terry mcauliffe eeked out a win. he beat cuccinelli by three points by using the obama 2o 12 playbook. he ran up the score especially in the washington suburbs.

in suburb and richmond, democratic state senator easily beat the republican winning the contest by double-digits. the attorney general's race remains too close to call with 99% of the vote in. the democrat mark herring leads them by just over 600 votes. in virginia we do this in the attorney general races a lot these days. bob mcdonald had the nail biter like that. they can request a recount if it's less than 1% of the vote. we will see a rebound in that race. chris christie won reelection in a landslide with 60% of the vote in a state that the president won by 17 points. new york city will have the first democratic mayor in two decad decades. the 109th mayor by a big margin

and they chose a progressive path. you got that right. in boston, marty walsh will precede the longest serving mayor. the city councilman with the support of organized labor. here's one should you know about. they -elected the first white mayor in nearly four decades. he ran on the financial turn around and defeated wayne county sheriff 55-45. one other result we want to get to on the west coast, seattle won a handful of cities where the incumbent may be out. after legalizing gay marriage, ed murray is on the way to beating the incumbent mayor. remember it's mail in state there and they have a lot more ballots to count. this will be the third straight marror not given a ree to.

the republican establishment got a win there. they will bail out bradley byrne who beat dean young by less than 4,000 votes. he will beat him on the floor and it's pretty much a done deal. virginia turned into a proxy fight. republicans hammering the president's health care law and democrats running against the shut down in the 53 party and both party his a good message. they were right. it shows mcoff il leading keach nelly and he credited the roll out of the health care plan. >> we said this race was a referendum on obama care and although we lost, you send a message to the president of the united states that you believe

that virginia understands that obama care is a failure and that you want to be in charge of your health care and not the government. >> exit polls show they were sour on health care saying they a pose the law. 27% of the virginia electorate who said it mattered the most in the vote for governor picked cuccinelli over mcoff il. they got a boost and plamed president obama. 32% said someone in their household was affected by the shut down and they picked mcauliffe, 56-37 over cuccinelli. they had ads on abortion rights and one in five said abortion was the most important issue. he won the votes nearly six in ten. it marks the first time since 1973 when the party that controls the white house won the

governor's race. the first time since reconstruction that a party held the governorship for one term. they are a few hundred absentee ballots away from the sweep, the first since 1989. they could hold all five u.s. elected offices and that will be the first time the democrats have done that since 1969. 53% of virginia voters disapprove of the 39's jobber performance. they might have hurt the entire democratic ticket a bit, declaring victory. they promised to reach out to every republican legislature. the shout outs by name. >> the truth is that this election was never a choice between democrats and republicans. it was a choice about whether

chris christie's speech. they were trying to preach bipartisanship. christie won because he preached bipartisanship. the exit polls don't look bipartisan. he had a lot of republican support, but believed that's what voters were endorsing. >> terry made very ample points about working in a bipartisan way. getting to richmond and working with the republicans and democrats to bring the job's first message and make that a reality. there was a bipartisan under tone and say here's the chairman of the party talking about bipartisanship. that couldn't be better for virginia and it worked. there republicans who did vote for terry and the numbers be what they may, they did vote for terry. >> doing television ads for him. >> absolutely.

this is not a guy you can expect to do well in the state of iowa and south carolina. i want to bring up a point they made. comparisons between christie and george w. bush. look at the coalition. george w. bush had the evangelical kekds to a lot of crucial voters in places like iowa and south carolina. what does the christie republican nomination look like to winning republican in this day and age. >> that is the billion dollar question. the next question is the one in the iowa caucus. maybe they will go around and make a pitch in new hampshire and florida. he is going have to find a way to endure a republican primary while protecting the brand to win general elections. it will come down to three candidates who face the litmus

what you learned yesterday that tells you something about 2013. >> the electorate in virginia mirrored the electorate in 2012 in terms of dem kbrf graphics. the president won by four points and auliffe by points. when you turn outlooks similar to the way it looked in a presidential election, that's good for democrats. i think the health care message will be a problem. i don't buy that this was the issue that tightened the race up. this kind of an electorate, these are the results you should expect. >> it's interesting. with democrats last night, they said hey, they are relieved they were able to turn out this type of electorate without obama on the ticket.

2013 mostly in the books. we've got that recount in virginia, but only 364 days until we do it all over again in 2014 and of course 2016 is always on our minds. governor christie will be on the national stage almost immediately as he takes over the republican governors association chairmanship during the rga's annual meeting that starts two weeks from today. what does that really mean? this is what it really means. it gives him a platform to travel, oh, to every state in the country in 2014. oh, and maybe every key swing state in the country in 2014. when you look at it here. look, i've always been curious, how is jersey going to play in the midwest. the path to the white house is through the midwest but he also needs to get to know primary voters. in south carolina and florida, he'll be spending a lot of time there. one state, of course, republicans lost last night, the

key swing state of virginia. moving along here. and terry mcauliffe's win is the glass half full story line for the democrats. they might sweep, that's a big deal. major swing state, all good. they turned out. the coalition that was the obama coalition to carry a swing state like virginia. the glass is half empty here. the democrats have to do some soul searching this morning. health care is a real issue. this is not going away. people that said health care was a important issue to them picked cuccinelli. people who said the economy was important to them picked cuccinelli in virginia. just a couple of yellow flags democrats should be worried about. couple more things. look at the president's approval rating in the state of new jersey. 51% approval rating. we know he had had an all-time low in the nbc/wall street journal poll. things not going so well for the white house. finally, i want to show you this. the republican brand problem is
